The carriers for audiovisual documents are fragile and subject to rapid decay: the lifespan of most tapes, even when stored under good conditions, is measured in decades. Continued access is further complicated because evolving technology forces equipment out of use. Digitization of audiovisual materials would enhance the chances of their survival and facilitate access, but is as yet expensive and little applied outside the large institutions.

TAPE, funded under the Culture 2000 programme of the EU, is a project for raising awareness and training by expert meetings, research, publications and workshops. TAPE focuses on audiovisual collections held outside the major national institutions with specific responsibilities for audiovisual heritage.

The Phonogrammarchiv is one of TAPE's partner institutions.

Vienna's international music spectrum

Project of the Phonogrammarchiv, funded by the Cultural Department of the City of Vienna
Project coordinator: Christiane Fennesz-Juhasz
Members of the project staff: Heidi Köb, Christian Liebl, Katharina Thenius-Wilscher, Franz Pavuza

The project, conducted during 2002 and 2003, aimed at the audio-visual documentation of the musical activities of immigrants having lived in Vienna for one to three generations. Field research was carried out among immigrant communities from West Africa (esp. Senegal, Nigeria), Asia (mainly from Indonesia) and South-Eastern Europe (Roma, Turks), The focus was on any kind of music currently popular among the respective communities. Thus, in the course of the project, 12 events including live performances of music and dance were recorded on both audio and video tape (e.g. feasts at important holidays organised by immigrant associations, regular dances, private celebrations, music and dance rehearsal, cultural presentations, contests, etc.). Additionally, interviews with musicians, dancers and organisers were conducted, part of which were also tape-recorded. In spite of the official ending of the project further field work among the respective immigrant communities has been done.

Together with various additional documentary material (on the performers, the socio-cultural background etc.), the audio and video recordings (currently with a total length of 55 and 52 hours respectively) have been deposited in the Phonogrammarchiv and are thus available for future studies.

The primary aim of this project, carried out September 2000 - December 2003, was to contribute to the overcoming of the socio-economic marginalisation of the Roma and Sinti by improving the range of information on Roma, including its pedagogical-didactic preparation.
The project activities targeted to achieve this aim comprised:
Improving the educational materials for Roma, including the employment of new technologies, improving the information about Roma by using the Internet, improving the education and further education of teachers.
These aims have been achieved by the following measures:

  1. Adaptation and new development of Romani Computer Learning Games for Roma children.
  2. Establishment of a multi-lingual, multi-media, computer-supported data base (easily accessible via Internet) regarding ethnology, culture, history, the socio-political situation, etc. of the Roma by the implementation of information about Roma groups and Roma personalities. This data base is complemented by an info pack containing books, CDs, videos and accompanying materials (educational/didactic), which support the use of the data base in the course of the training and (further) education of teachers etc.
  3. Development of modules on the basis of the principles of inter-cultural learning, which may be used in view of the education and further education of teachers as well as for Roma mediators.
